Kiwifruit grafting can be carried out in spring, preferably in February to March, to ensure that the juice inside will not flow out before the bleeding period, which can improve the survival rate. If this period is missed, the grafting can be carried out in the first ten days of April, when the climate is also suitable and the survival rate is high. June to July is also the grafting period. At this time, the humidity is high, which is conducive to the healing of the two. According to local climate conditions, suitable grafting time can be selected.
1. Scion and rootstock: first of all, the scion shall be pruned by selecting the pure plant of the variety, which shall be robust in growth, in good growth state and free from pests and diseases. The choice of rootstock should be robust, with solid root position and good adaptability. The diameter is about 0.5-1.5cm.
2. Start grafting: there are three commonly used grafting methods, namely, single bud branch cutting, single bud branch ventral grafting and single bud slice ventral grafting. These three methods can have advantages and disadvantages. The first one is to cut a full bud, then cut it flat on the stock, then cut it down vertically, and insert the bud at the incision. The second is to cut the shoots, cut the rootstock down, and then insert the shoots. The third is to cut the buds vertically from the top, take out the buds, and then insert them into the cutting of the rootstock.
