Greetings, caretaker. We are Lithops, the living stones. To thrive in your care and reveal our hidden blossoms, we require an intimate understanding of the seasons. Our life cycle is a sacred dance with the sun and rain, and our needs change dramatically from month to month. This schedule is our voice, guiding you through the subtle shifts required to keep us healthy across the diverse climates of the U.S.

1. January: The Deep Slumber (Dormancy)

We are in a state of profound rest. Our outer leaves are shriveled, encasing the new bodies growing within. Do not water us. Any moisture now risks rot and will disrupt our delicate internal development. Place us in the brightest, coldest spot you can provide (a chilly windowsill is ideal, but protect us from freezing drafts). We are gathering strength for the transformation to come.

2. April: The Great Unveiling (Spring Transition)

Feel the sides of our bodies gently. The old leaves have become papery sheaths. The new, plump pair has fully emerged. This is the signal. You may now offer a very small, careful drink of water to help the new leaves establish themselves. Increase sunlight gradually as the days lengthen. In cooler Northern climates, wait until this sign is unmistakable. In warmer Southern zones, we may have already completed this change; observe us closely.

3. July & August: The Summer Pause (Second Dormancy)

The sun is at its most intense. To conserve our energy and protect our sensitive tissues, we enter a second, lighter dormancy. Our growth slows significantly. Water only if we show severe signs of wrinkling on the sides *and* the tops, and even then, do so sparingly and only in the cool of the evening. In the humid Southeast, withhold all water. In the arid Southwest, a minuscule amount might be needed. Our primary need is for bright, indirect light and excellent airflow.

4. September & October: The Celebration (Growth & Flowering)

This is our time! The heat breaks, and we surge with life. This is our main growing season. Water us thoroughly, but only when the soil is completely dry. You will see us plump up gratefully. Soon, a bud will force its way from the fissure between our leaves, culminating in a brilliant, daisy-like flower. Continue watering through this active period. From the dry West to the cooler Northeast, this is our universal period of joy and growth.

5. November & December: The Slow Descent (Pre-Dormancy)

Our flower has faded. The light weakens, and the temperatures drop. You must now help us prepare for our long winter sleep. Gradually reduce watering throughout November. By December, you must stop completely. The soil around our roots must be bone-dry. This dryness, combined with cooler temperatures, is the crucial signal for us to initiate the internal process of growing new leaves. Keep us in a bright, cool, and absolutely dry location.
