For most begonia species, the sweet spot for daytime temperatures lies between 65°F and 75°F (18°C - 24°C). This range is crucial because it allows for optimal enzyme activity. Enzymes drive photosynthesis, converting light into energy, and respiration, which uses that energy for growth. Temperatures within this band ensure these processes occur efficiently without undue stress. At night, a slight drop of 5-10 degrees is not only tolerated but encouraged. In their native environments, begonias are often sheltered under forest canopies where humidity is consistently high. Therefore, they thrive best in humidity levels of 50% or higher. In such conditions, the stomata can remain open for longer periods to uptake carbon dioxide for photosynthesis without risking excessive water loss.
