From my perspective as an impatiens plant, my entire purpose is to produce a spectacular, continuous display of blooms to attract pollinators. This is an energetically expensive process. To sustain it, I require a consistent and balanced supply of key nutrients. The primary macronutrients I crave are Nitrogen (N) for healthy, green foliage to support my photosynthesis; Phosphorus (P) which is absolutely critical for strong root development and, most importantly, for flower and seed production; and Potassium (K) for overall plant vigor and disease resistance. A lack of phosphorus, in particular, will result in lush leaves but very few of the blooms you desire.
To keep my flowers coming non-stop, please feed me with a water-soluble fertilizer that is balanced or has a slightly higher middle number. A formula like 10-10-10 or 15-30-15 is ideal. The first number (Nitrogen) supports my leafy growth, which is the engine room for energy production. However, it is the second number (Phosphorus) that directly signals to my system to shift energy into creating prolific blooms rather than just more leaves. A fertilizer too high in nitrogen will make me tall and leggy with minimal flowers. A slow-release granular fertilizer mixed into my soil at planting time is also an excellent way to provide a steady, gentle stream of nutrients that I can uptake as I need them.
Consistency is key. I am a heavy feeder during my long blooming season. I would greatly appreciate a diluted dose of water-soluble fertilizer every two to four weeks. Please follow the package directions for dilution, as too strong a solution can burn my sensitive roots, causing my leaf tips to brown and compromising my ability to absorb water and nutrients. The best practice is to apply the fertilizer solution to my soil when I am already moist. Water me lightly first, then apply the fertilizer. This prevents root shock and ensures even distribution of the nutrients I so desperately need to keep producing flowers for you.
While fertilizer is vital, it is not the only factor. My ability to process these nutrients depends on my overall well-being. I need consistently moist, well-draining soil. If I am allowed to wilt from drought, I become stressed and will drop my flower buds to conserve energy. Conversely, if my roots are sitting in waterlogged soil, they will rot, and I will be unable to uptake any fertilizer at all, no matter how high-quality it is. Furthermore, I thrive in partial to full shade. Intense, direct afternoon sun scorches my leaves, increases my water loss, and causes me immense stress, which directly hinders my blooming capacity.
