Magnolia is the Magnolia genus of Magnoliaceae, also known as magnolia, Magnolia. It is a unique plant in China. It has beautiful flowers, elegant fragrance, beautiful solitary or cluster plants, graceful tree shape, luxuriant branches and flowers. It is a very suitable ornamental plant.

Cultivation method of Magnolia

Basin earth

Magnolia is fond of loose and fertile acid and slightly acid soil. It can be used as culture soil by mixing rotten leaf soil and vegetable garden soil, and adding 50-150g bone meal or NPK compound fertilizer in the soil.

The basin should be slightly deeper, and some hard plastic foam blocks should be placed on the bottom of the basin to enhance drainage and prevent rotting roots. Every year or every other year, turn the basin after the flower to change the soil, and reserve 1 /2 to 1 /3 of the old soil.

watering

Magnolia likes to be wet and afraid of waterlogging, so it's important to water it properly. From the beginning of spring to flowering, the basin soil should be kept moist but not wet; after flowering, the basin soil should be kept moist but not waterlogged; after defoliation, the basin soil should be kept slightly moist but not dry.

No drought or waterlogging is allowed at any time, especially in rainy season.

fertilizer

Magnolia is fond of fertilizer. To apply fertilizer, we should seize the two key opportunities: the first two months before flowering and the second five months after flowering. We should apply nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium compound fertilizer once every ten days or so. The former makes the buds expand and the flowers open, the latter promotes more buds and flowers in the next spring.

When the leaves fall in winter, the fertilizer mainly composed of P and K should be applied once to enhance the ability of resisting cold and overwintering. Do not apply nitrogen alone.

Light and temperature

Magnolia is fond of light. It is often seen in sunny courtyard and roof garden. Although it can grow in half shade, it is thin and has few flowers. When it is overcast, it has no flowers.

It's cold resistant, and it can survive outdoors in Beijing and its south.

trim

The root of Magnolia has strong tillering ability. If it does not need to be propagated, it can be cut as long as it grows and keep 3 main stems in each pot. For branches that are too long and too high, they can be cut short when they just unfold leaves after flowers. Because of their poor healing ability, they should be coated with sulfur powder to prevent corrosion after cutting. If not necessary, they should not be cut. If you don't need to plant and propagate after the flower, you should cut off the remnant flower with its stalk.

Ramet method

After flowering, combine with turning basin to change soil, pour out the plant, cut off the root of the seed plant with sprouting tiller with sharp scissors or knives, and then plant another plant.

Transplanting can be carried out before flowering in autumn or early spring. The small seedlings are stained with mud, and the big seedlings must carry soil balls. Fertilizer was applied once before and after flowering, mainly P and K fertilizer. Keep the soil moisture in high temperature in summer and dry season in autumn.

After flowering and before sprouting new branches, the dead branches, dense branches and short branches should be cut off.

Grafting method

Selection and treatment of Rootstock

The rootstock should choose the inferior species that do not show buds or show less buds at the beginning and the full bud stage. First saw the crown off the main branch and the central leader. The horizontal height from the ground should be similar to avoid the imbalance of the power of each main branch caused by the top advantage; the upper main branch should be shorter than the next one, and the height of the central leading branch should be slightly higher than the top one. The interface shall be selected at a smooth place, and the cutting edge shall be leveled with a cutting knife.

Selection and treatment of scion

For the scion of Magnolia grandiflora, a single plant of superior varieties, such as Alternanthera lanceolata, Prunus davidii or Prunus dichotomous, should be selected. The annual branches with strong growth, full development and no diseases and insect pests should be selected and picked at the same time.

Selection of grafting methods

The grafting technique is suitable from before and after sprouting to leaf spreading stage in spring. Generally in the middle and late March, only axillary buds do not germinate, and the time can be prolonged. Grafting methods include: splitting, cutting and budding.

Cleavage is mainly used for rough branches. First, cleave from the interface with a cleaver or sharp axe. Put pegs in the center of the cleavage and cut the scion to about 10 cm long. Cut the base into wedges and insert them into the cleavage to align the outer cambium with each other. One scion can be attached to each side of each cleavage. After that, gently pull out the pegs.

Cutting is to cut a piece of wood longitudinally at the interface, cut the scion to about 5cm long, cut the two sides of the base into one long one short two cutting surfaces (about 3cm long and 1.5cm short), insert the short surface outward into the incision, and align the short surface with one end to form a layer.

Budding is to use budding to fill the gap in the branch group, so that the branch group is complete.

After grafting with the above methods, the joints shall be wrapped tightly and tightly with plastic film strips immediately, and the scions shall be exposed.

Management after grafting

About 20 days after grafting, the scion survived, and then the leaves could be drawn. It should be noted that the rootstock should be sprouted and removed in time. If it does not survive, budding should be carried out at a suitable place on the rootstock in summer. When the new shoots of scions are 50 cm long, they can pick the heart to increase the branches and form the crown as early as possible.

The economic value of Magnolia

The bark, leaves and flower buds of magnolia can be used as medicine; the dried flower bud is called magnolia, which is fragrant and spicy. It contains the volatile oil mainly including citron magnolial, eugenol and Eucalyptus oleoresin. It is mainly used for rhinitis and headache, as an analgesic and anti-inflammatory agent. It is a traditional Chinese medicine for more than 2000 years in China, and also as the grafting stock of Magnoliaceae plants such as Magnolia and brandy.

Magnolia has not only large and beautiful flowers, graceful flowers, fragrant smell, high ornamental value, few diseases and insect pests, but also its flower bud is named magnolia, which has always been the main medicine for treating rhinopathy in traditional Chinese medicine. It is picked at the pre bud stage and stored in a well ventilated and dry place.

In compendium of Materia Medica, Li Shizhen made a positive discussion on the curative effect of treating rhinopathy. Modern research has proved that the volatile oil contained in Magnolia has a contractive effect on the blood vessels of the nasal mucosa, and can promote the absorption of secretions, thus improving the ventilation function of the nostril. In the treatment of acute and chronic rhinitis and sinusitis, 10 grams of Magnolia and Xanthium sibiricum can be used respectively, and then the concentrated juice can be taken and dripped into the nose 3 or 4 times a day, with good effect. < spanstyle = "font family: Simsun; color:
