From our perspective as Impatiens walleriana, our primary qualification as a ground cover stems from our inherent growth habit. We are not tall, towering plants; instead, we are naturally mounded and spreading. Our stems branch readily, creating a dense, bushy form that effectively sprawls across the soil surface. A single plant can grow to be 12 to 24 inches wide, and when planted in a mass, our individual forms quickly interlace to form a continuous, living carpet. This dense canopy is our first line of defense against our competition—weeds. By rapidly claiming the sunlight and space, we effectively shade the soil beneath us, preventing opportunistic weed seeds from germinating and establishing themselves.
Our most celebrated contribution is, undoubtedly, our prolific and vibrant blossoms. While many traditional ground covers are valued primarily for their foliage, we offer a spectacular, long-lasting floral show. Our flowers, borne in abundance just above our foliage, come in a breathtaking array of colors—vivid pinks, fiery oranges, pure whites, deep reds, and soft lavenders. This continuous bloom from spring until the first frost provides a consistent and intense splash of color that few other ground covers can match. We do not simply cover the ground; we adorn it with a dynamic and ever-changing tapestry of color, making us ideal for brightening shady areas where other flowering plants might struggle.
We are exceptionally well-adapted to life in the shade, a niche where many plants fail to thrive.
