My roots are my foundation. They are thick, fleshy rhizomes that store water and nutrients, and they despise constant sogginess. Therefore, my pot must be a partner in moisture management. Drainage is the single most critical factor. You must select a container with multiple, ample drainage holes at its base. Without this, water will pool around my roots, inviting rot and certain demise. As for material, I have preferences. Unglazed terracotta is excellent; its porous nature allows the soil to breathe and excess moisture to evaporate through the walls. A sturdy ceramic or plastic pot will also suffice, but you must be even more vigilant with your watering. Regarding size, I am a slow, clump-forming grower. A pot that is too large will hold excess soil that stays wet for too long. Choose a container that gives my rootball only an inch or two of space on all sides.
The soil you provide me is my world. It must be well-draining yet capable of retaining some moisture and nutrients. A standard, heavy garden soil is a prison for my roots; it compacts and suffocates me. I desire a rich, but open and airy mix. A high-quality, peat-based potting mix is a good start, but I would be even happier if you amended it. Please consider mixing in some perlite, orchid bark, or coarse horticultural sand. These ingredients create essential air pockets and improve drainage dramatically, ensuring my rhizomes remain healthy and oxygenated. A slightly acidic to neutral pH is my preference.
In my native woodland habitats, I dwell under the dappled shade of taller trees. I require this same gentle light in your home. Direct, harsh sunlight, especially from a south-facing window, will scorch and bleach my beautiful, dark green, strap-like leaves. A north-facing window is often perfect. An east-facing window, which offers gentle morning sun, is also acceptable. I can also adapt to the consistent, indirect light provided by a bright artificial source. I am tolerant of a range of temperatures but prefer a stable environment similar to a comfortable room for humans, avoiding cold drafts from windows or doors in winter and blasts of hot, dry air from heating vents. While I appreciate humidity, I am more adaptable than many tropical plants; a occasional misting or a pebble tray will keep my leaf tips from browning, especially in dry, heated homes.
