Our most fundamental need is oxygen. In our natural habitat, we are epiphytes, meaning we begin our lives climbing up trees in humid jungles. Our roots are aerial and accustomed to breathing freely in the air, surrounded by moss and leaf litter. When confined to a pot, we demand a mix that mimics these conditions. A dense, water-retentive soil is a death sentence for us; it suffocates our roots, leading to rot, which you will see as yellowing leaves and a decline in our overall vigor. Therefore, the perfect mix must be chunky, loose, and exceptionally well-draining.
Think of creating a custom blend rather than using a generic, all-purpose potting soil. A standard mix is too fine and holds too much moisture. Here is a recipe for a perfect, breathable environment for my root system:
Base Component (Approx. 40%): Coarse-Grade Orchid Bark. This is the most critical ingredient. The large chunks of bark create essential air pockets, providing the structure and drainage we crave. It prevents the mix from compacting over time, ensuring my roots always have room to breathe and explore.
Moisture-Retentive Component (Approx. 20%): Coconut Coir. While we hate wet feet, we do need consistent moisture. Coconut coir is superior to peat moss as it absorbs water well but also rewets easily if it dries out completely. It provides the slight humidity around the roots without becoming waterlogged.
Aeration & Drainage Boosters (Approx. 40% Combined): This portion is a mix of chunky additives. Perlite is a non-negotiable lightweight mineral that keeps the soil mix open and prevents compaction. Horticultural Charcoal is a wonderful addition that helps to purify the mix, absorb impurities, and further improve drainage. A handful of Pumice or coarse gravel can also be added for extra weight and drainage.
