Hello! From my perspective as a begonia, the first and most crucial choice you make is where I will live. I am not a sun worshipper like a cactus, nor a shade dweller like some ferns. I crave bright, indirect light. A spot near an east or north-facing window is my idea of paradise. Direct afternoon sun will scorch my beautiful leaves, leaving crispy, brown marks—a sure sign I am in distress. If you only have a south or west window, please place me a few feet back or use a sheer curtain to filter the harsh rays. My leaves are my pride; help me keep them pristine.
My relationship with water is delicate. I enjoy consistently moist soil, but I absolutely despise having my feet constantly wet. Soggy, waterlogged soil will lead to my most dreaded enemy: root rot. This condition suffocates my roots, turning them mushy and black, and will ultimately be my end. The best way to care for me is to check the soil with your finger. When the top inch feels dry to the touch, it is time for a thorough, deep drink. Water me slowly and evenly until you see water trickle from my pot's drainage holes—this is non-negotiable for my survival. Please empty the saucer afterwards so I am not left sitting in the water.
I am a tropical plant at heart, which means I adore a warm and humid environment. A comfortable room temperature between 65°F and 75°F (18°C - 24°C) is perfect. Please keep me away from cold drafts, air conditioning vents, and heating sources, as sudden temperature changes cause me great stress. While I can adapt to average home humidity, I will truly flourish with extra moisture in the air. You will see my gratitude in larger, more vibrant leaves. Grouping me with other plants creates a lovely microclimate, or you can place my pot on a pebble tray filled with water (ensure my pot is not sitting directly in the water).
To produce my stunning leaves and occasional blooms, I need a steady supply of nutrients. However, I have a modest appetite. During my active growing season in spring and summer, feeding me with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half-strength once a month is perfect. This gives me just the right boost without overwhelming my system, which can lead to a harmful buildup of salts in the soil. In the autumn and winter, when my growth naturally slows down, I prefer to rest. Please withhold fertilizer during these dormant months; I am simply not hungry.
