This shallow nature means the plant is highly sensitive to its immediate underground environment, making correct planting depth and soil conditions absolutely critical for its survival and prosperity. A root system that is too deep struggles to access oxygen and resources, while one that is too shallow is vulnerable to desiccation and temperature extremes.
The golden rule for planting, from the root's point of view, is to place the crown of the plant—the point where the stem tissue meets the root tissue—at or slightly above the surrounding soil level. Planting too deep is a severe stressor. It buries the crown and upper roots, drastically reducing oxygen availability in the soil zone they occupy. Oxygen is essential for root respiration, the process that generates energy for growth and nutrient uptake.
