As a scented geranium, light is my primary source of energy and directly influences the potency of my fragrant leaves. When you place me outdoors, I thrive in a location with full sun to partial shade. At least six hours of sunlight daily allows me to perform robust photosynthesis, resulting in strong, bushy growth and highly aromatic foliage. Indoors, I am entirely dependent on you. Please place me in my favorite spot: a south-facing windowsill where I can bask in the brightest light your home offers. Without sufficient light, I will become leggy as I stretch pathetically towards any available light source, and my signature scent will become disappointingly weak.
My roots have very specific demands. I despise having wet feet. Soggy, waterlogged soil is a death sentence for me, leading to root rot. Therefore, I require a well-draining potting mix. A blend designed for cacti or succulents, amended with some perlite, is perfect. It allows water to flow through freely while providing enough structure for my roots to anchor. My watering needs are simple: water me deeply when the top inch of soil feels dry to your touch. Then, allow the excess water to drain away completely and let the soil approach dryness again before the next watering. In winter, when my growth slows, I will need even less frequent drinks.
I enjoy the same comfortable temperatures that you do. During the active growing season, I prefer daytime temperatures between 65-75°F (18-24°C). I can tolerate warmer outdoor temperatures, but I truly appreciate some afternoon shade during intense heat waves. Crucially, I need good air circulation around my leaves. Stagnant, stuffy air encourages fungal diseases like powdery mildew to take hold on my foliage. A gentle breeze from an open window or a small fan set on low (not blowing directly on me) works wonders indoors. When summer ends, you must bring me inside before the first frost, as I am not cold-hardy and will perish if exposed to freezing temperatures.
To produce my lush, scented leaves, I require some nourishment. During my active growth in spring and summer, please feed me monthly with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer, but dilute it to half the recommended strength. Over-fertilizing will lead to excessive leafy growth at the expense of my fragrance. To keep me looking my best and to encourage a bushy, compact shape, pinch back the growing tips regularly. This simple act of grooming tells me to branch out rather than grow tall and spindly. Always remove any yellowing or dead leaves to keep me healthy and to direct my energy towards new growth.
