From our roots outward, the single most critical factor for our health is the balance of air and water. We abhor having our roots sit in soggy, waterlogged soil; it suffocates us, leading to root rot and a swift decline. However, we are also thirsty plants, especially during our vibrant blooming period. Therefore, the ideal mix must drain exceptionally well while still holding onto enough moisture to sustain us between waterings. A high-quality, peat-based or coir-based potting mix serves as an excellent foundation. It provides a light, airy structure and possesses the necessary water-retentive properties without becoming dense and compacted.
To ensure the base mix doesn't become too compact over time, we require the addition of materials that create permanent air pockets. Perlite is our best friend here. These white, lightweight particles are volcanic glass that has been heated and expanded. They do not break down and are invaluable for keeping the soil mix loose and oxygenated, allowing our delicate feeder roots to breathe and grow freely. Horticultural grit or coarse sand can also be incorporated to further improve drainage and add weight to the pot, preventing top-heavy specimens from tipping over.
We are heavy feeders, particularly when producing our abundant, pendulous flowers. A standard potting mix contains some initial nutrients, but they are quickly exhausted. To support our long-term growth and prolific blooming, we need a consistent supply of energy. Incorporating a slow-release fertilizer granules into the soil mix at planting time is an excellent strategy. This provides a steady, gentle feed for several months. Furthermore, we appreciate the inclusion of nutrient-rich, well-decomposed organic matter like worm castings or leaf mold. This not only offers a mild nutrient boost but also improves the overall soil structure and fosters a healthy microbial ecosystem around our roots.
We slightly prefer a growing medium that is neutral to slightly acidic (a pH between 6.0 and 7.0). Most premium potting mixes fall within this range. To create the perfect home for us, a recommended blend would be: 60% a high-quality peat-free or peat-based potting compost, 20% perlite for aeration, 10% worm castings for gentle nutrition, and 10% horticultural grit or bark chips for added drainage and structure. This combination provides the perfect trifecta: moisture retention, excellent drainage, and a steady supply of the nutrients we need to reward you with a spectacular display of flowers throughout the season.
