Our most critical request is that you ensure our home does not flood. We despise having "wet feet." Please check your garden bed's drainage. If water pools on the surface after a rain, you must amend it. The best way to do this is by generously working in a few inches of organic compost. This wonderful material acts like a tiny sponge and soil conditioner, helping clay soils drain better and helping sandy soils retain just enough moisture. For an extra boost of aeration, you can also mix in some coarse sand or perlite. This creates tiny air pockets in the soil, allowing our roots to breathe easily, spread out, and access the oxygen we need for healthy growth.
Before you place us in the ground, we need a feast prepared! While we are not the hungriest flowers, we are heavy bloomers and need a steady supply of energy. Simply digging a hole and dropping us in is like being invited to a party with no food. Please, till the soil to a depth of at least 8-12 inches to loosen it up for our young roots.
