The leaves of Scirpus nipponensis are elliptic to lanceolate or ovate oblanceolate, about 8-15 cm long and 2-5 cm wide. The top is acuminate, the base is cuneiform, both surfaces are glabrous, but the edge usually has marginal hairs.
Scirpus is the inflorescence of dichasium, the diameter of the flower is 4-5cm, and the pedicel is very short. Bracts are lanceolate, calyx is tubular, calyx teeth are lanceolate. Its petals are orange red, narrowly cuneate. The flowering period is from June to July every year.
Scirpus is a perennial herb, about 50-90 cm high. Roots are fine cylindrical, yellowish white, clustered. The stems are solitary and erect.
