Elm often cuttage in late spring and early autumn, using the branches of the year or last year.
It is very difficult to get the ideal cutting medium for family cutting. It is recommended to use the prepared and detoxified cutting medium. It is also OK to use medium coarse river sand, but it should be rinsed with water several times before use.
Don't use sea sand and river sand in saline and alkaline areas. They are not suitable for the growth of flowers and plants.
If the current year's shoots are selected, from the end of spring to the early autumn when the plants grow vigorously, the current year's thick branches are selected as the cuttings.
After cutting the branches, select the strong parts and cut them into 5-15 cm long sections, each section with more than 3 leaf nodes.
When cutting the cuttings, it should be noted that the upper cut is about 1 cm above the last leaf node, and the lower cut is about 0.5 cm below the lowest leaf node. The upper and lower cuts should be flat.
If the old branches of last year are selected, the robust branches of last year are selected as the cuttings after the temperature rises in early spring, and 3-4 nodes are usually reserved for each segment of the cuttings.
The suitable temperature for rooting of cuttings is 20 ℃ - 30 ℃, lower than 20 ℃, the cuttings are difficult to rooting, higher than 30 ℃, the cuttings are easy to be infected by pathogens and rot, the higher the temperature, the greater the proportion of rot.
After cutting, the relative humidity of air must be kept at 75% - 85%. The basic requirement for rooting of cuttings is to ensure that the cuttings are fresh and tender before rooting to produce rooting materials.
After cutting, the sun must be covered by 50% - 80%. After the root system grows out, the shading net shall be gradually removed. In sunny days, the shading net shall be removed at 4:00 p.m. every day, and the shading net shall be covered before 9:00 a.m. the next day.
